Welcome back!  Spring break is officially over and we are back to work!  It was great seeing the kids today.  I missed them.  I wanted to let you know about a few of things coming up.  First our Beatrix Potter Tea Party is next week.  We will be having it on Wednesday, April 17th.  A note will be coming home on Friday about what to bring.  If you have any tea cups or tea pots we could borrow we would appreciate it.  Also, our field trip to the Guide Dogs for the Blind is May 1st.  We will need parent drivers for this trip.  I will send home the information soon.  Last, I am having knee replacement surgery on Monday, May 20th and will be out the last three weeks of school.  I already have my substitutes lined up.  Mrs. Norried will be doing the first two weeks that I am gone and Mr. Y will be doing the last week of school.  Don't worry I will be working on the report cards before I leave!  I am also hoping to celebrate with the kiddos before I go, probably on Friday, May 17.  If I am up and about by the last week of school I will be stopping by.  I always have such a hard time saying good bye.  If you have any questions, please ask.

The stories we will be reading this month are:  Salt in his Shoes, Catching the Moon, Miss Rumphius, and the Old Elm Speaks.  We will be learning about the comprehension skills:  making connections, identifying the lesson, story structure, and poetry.  For grammar we will be learning about prefixes and suffixes. In math we will be working with muliples of 10, one hundred, and one thousand.  We will be measuring with paperclips and using number lines.  For reader's workshop we will be moving on to non-fiction.  For writing we will be finishing up our non-fiction books and then I would like to take some time to review paragraph writing.  We will definitely be busy this month and next!!!

For homework I am thinking of not sending home both reading and writing home each week.  Instead I will send home reading comprehension one week and writing the next.  Math will still be coming home along with spelling.  I am really wanting the kids to take their time and do their best work on these pages.  Please remember both homework and library books are due back on Thursday or Friday each week.  Also, don't forget to mark your child's reading time on the PTA Eagle Reading calendars.  This week only spelling is going home!

It was so nice to see most of you at Open House.  The children were excited to show you their work that they worked so hard on.  The "Nicest Things" pictures should have come home the day after open house and for my friends who were not here on Friday, they should be coming home today.  I hope you love them as much as I do.  Thanks to my friend Tammi who helps me with these each year.  She is a rock star.  Her son even helped this year.
